Hong Hunkin: the procedure for starting depends upon whether you are entering through a portal or through a shaft. Once inside the tunnel points on centerline are established in the roof (the back in mining terminology). plumb bobs can be hung from these points. a transit set up under one point sights the point ahead and then projects this to the tunnel face. the centerline is marked with paint on the face and mining continues from that point on. This is different from surface surveying in that on the surface you have points ahead of the work.
