Canon 17-40L good for landscape?

Carmina Stickney: Even with the crop factor, the 17-40mm f4L would be a good landscape lens. Although you aren't working at 17mm's in real time, it's still better than say a 24mm lens- which would be much less-wide angle, with the crop factor or not. Basically, even with the crop factor 17mm's is quite wide enough. If you really want wide-angle, get the Canon 10-22mm, it's not an L lens, but it's wider, and fairly sharp:http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EF-S-10-22mm-3-5-4-5-D......Show more

Myesha Zerbe: With the crop factor, anything on that lens past 25mm or so starts getting dicey. To be honest, though, it really depends on what you're shooting. I have a 10-22 lens I use on a Rebel XT, and have shot landscapes all through that range, so your lens has some overlap there. The trick to landscapes is a good tripod, small apertures, and most importantly, timing. I'll take a sunset with a point-and-shoot over some midday harshly lit mess taken with a full frame camera. Magic ! hour is magic for a reason, and saving key shots for sunsets or sunrises will pay off....Show more

Violette Vanek: Since your camera has a "crop factor" of 1.6, the 17-40mm lens will perform as a 27.2-64mm lens. The 10-22mm (16-35.2) might be a better choice. For the very best landscapes, have your camera mounted on a tripod and leveled.
