Alise Rutgers: IF the doctor took swab samples from the cervix/vagina then yes that was a pap smear and it does check for hpv and cancer.
Collin Pelfrey: That is correct.
Vernon Martorana: A pelvic and a pap smear is often done at the same time. With a Pap a swabbing of the cerivx is take to look for abnormal cell changes. Most abnormal cell changes are due to HPV. A Pap test is not an HPV test. Sometimes after abnormal cell changes are seen a second test immediately follows c! onfirming high risk HPV types. The HPV test is not usually done when no abnormal cervical cells are seen. The HPV test does not screen for all 40 genital HPV types. Sometimes an HPV test is not done for the gal under 30. Sometimes a woman can have a negative Pap test but still have HPV. Sometimes it takes months to years after acquiring HPV before abnormal cell changes of the cervix develop. www.thehpvtest.comWhen a Pap test is done the doctor or lab sends a note saying everything was normal or the office may call you for another appointment to talk with the doctor to get your results. What is a pelvic exam? In a pelvic exam, the uterus, vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, and rectum are felt to find any abnormality in their shape or size. During a pelvic exam, an instrument called a speculum is used to widen the vagina so that the upper portion of the vagina and the cervix can be seen. Why are a Pap test and pelvic exam important? A Pap test and pelvic exam a! re important parts of a womanâs routine health care because ! they can detect abnormalities that may lead to invasive cancer of the cervix. These abnormalities can be treated before cancer develops. Most invasive cancers of the cervix can be prevented if women have Pap tests regularly. Also, as with many types of cancer, cancer of the cervix is more likely to be treated successfully if it is detected early.http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Detec......Show more
